Step-Type Drag Bits
Step-type bits feature a staggered, multi-level blade profile that spreads the cutting load progressively across the face of the bit rather than concentrating it in one zone. This staggered design reduces torque fluctuation, improves directional stability, and helps the bit maintain a straighter, more consistent hole even as formation conditions shift. The cutting structure uses tungsten carbide or PDC inserts for extended wear resistance, while a balanced hydraulic flow design helps prevent bit balling in sticky ground. Combined with a reinforced shank and body for high torque transmission, the result is smooth, low-vibration drilling and longer bit life thanks to wear being distributed across the cutting steps rather than a single edge.
These bits perform best in soft-to-medium-soft formations such as clay, shale, and soft sandstone, and are a strong fit for water well drilling, geotechnical and environmental boreholes, and shallow foundation or anchor work.
Chevron-Type Drag Bits
Chevron-type bits use a V-shaped blade arrangement designed to channel cuttings away from the face efficiently while keeping the bit aggressively engaged with the formation. The symmetrical layout balances load across the bit, reducing bit walk, while hardfacing along the leading edges adds abrasion resistance for demanding conditions. Cutting structures are available in tungsten carbide or diamond-enhanced options depending on the application.
The chevron geometry really shines when cuttings volume is high or clay content makes evacuation difficult — the V-shaped channels clear material efficiently, which cuts down on downtime from packing or balling. The self-centering action also supports stable, well-aligned holes even at higher rotational speeds. These bits are well suited to auger and rotary drilling, blast hole applications, and general construction drilling where efficient cuttings removal is a priority.
