Choosing between submersible and peristaltic

Depth settles it in most cases. A peristaltic pump draws water up by suction from the surface, and suction lift has a hard physical limit — below a certain water table depth it simply will not work. A submersible pump sits in the water and pushes, so depth is not the constraint.

Where the water table is shallow enough that either would work, peristaltic is often the better choice for contaminated land sampling. Only the tubing contacts the sample, so decontamination between wells means fitting fresh tube rather than cleaning a pump body that has been sitting in contaminated groundwater. That is faster, cheaper and considerably easier to defend in a report.

Low-flow sampling in practice

Pumping hard is the fastest way to get a sample you cannot rely on. High rates draw water in from outside the screened interval, mixing horizons you carefully kept separate at installation, and they mobilise fines that turn up as turbidity and as elevated total metals.

Low-flow purging draws gently and watches field parameters through a flow through cell until they stabilise, at which point the water entering the pump is formation water. The samples are cleaner, more representative, and there is far less purge water — which on a contaminated site is a disposal cost avoided rather than merely an inconvenience.

Depth decides it. A peristaltic pump draws from the surface and is limited by suction lift, so it only works on shallow water tables. A submersible pump pushes from below and has no such limit. Where both would work, peristaltic has a real advantage for contamination work: only the tubing touches the sample, so decontamination is a matter of changing tube rather than cleaning a pump body.
Because pumping hard pulls in water from outside the screened interval and stirs up fines, and both distort the result. Low-flow purging draws gently and monitors field parameters until they stabilise, which gives a sample representative of the formation, far less turbidity, and a fraction of the purge water to dispose of. On contaminated sites that last point is a significant cost.
It lets you measure field parameters - pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, temperature - in the pumped stream without exposing it to air. That matters because dissolved oxygen and redox change the moment water meets the atmosphere, so a reading taken from an open bucket is not the reading you wanted. It is also how you tell when parameters have stabilised during low-flow purging.
Where the analysis is for dissolved rather than total concentrations. Filtering in line, using a filter holder in the pumped stream, avoids exposing the sample to air and avoids the disturbance of filtering afterwards. Whether to filter at all is set by the method you are working to, so check that before deciding.
Sampling without a power source. It is slow and it is manual, but it works on remote wells where carrying a generator or battery is impractical, and it is inexpensive enough to keep as a fallback when a powered pump fails mid-round.
For moving volume rather than taking samples - well development, dewatering, purging where a large number of casing volumes must be removed. It is the wrong tool for a representative sample and the right one for shifting water.

Decontaminate the pump body between wells and either dedicate tubing per well or replace it. With peristaltic pumps only the tubing contacts the sample, so changing tube is sufficient. With submersibles the pump itself needs proper cleaning, which is one reason many contaminated land crews prefer peristaltic where depth allows.
