Getting undisturbed samples right

An undisturbed sample is only undisturbed if nothing between the ground and the laboratory disturbs it, and the failure points are predictable. Driving a bare ring rather than one held square in a ring holder smears the sample perimeter — and the perimeter is exactly what the laboratory measures. Striking a ring or holder directly instead of through a hammering head deforms the ring. Leaving samples uncapped loses moisture, which changes both moisture content and bulk density.

None of these are subtle, and all of them are avoidable with equipment costing far less than a repeat site visit.

Soil sampler FAQs

Ring volume and dimensions are dictated by the laboratory method you are working to, not by preference - so establish that first. The A53, C53, E53 heavy and C60 kits cover the common configurations. Using a ring your laboratory does not support means either recalculating results or repeating the fieldwork, so it is worth one phone call before ordering.
They differ in ring dimensions and in the sampling arrangement supplied with them. The E53 heavy kit is built for firmer, more resistant soils where a standard kit would struggle. C60 uses a larger ring size. If you tell us the test standard and the soils you work in, we will confirm which kit matches.
A liner sampler drives a disposable liner into the ground, so the sample can be capped and sent to the laboratory without ever being transferred - which suits volatile determinands and minimises handling disturbance. A split tube sampler opens lengthways so the core can be described and sub-sampled on site. Choose by whether the priority is preserving the sample or examining it.
Because the geometry that recovers cohesive, saturated material cleanly is not the geometry that survives driving into dry, compacted or stony ground. Using a soft soils set in hard ground damages the cutting shoe; using a hard soils set in soft ground gives poorer recovery.
Reaching a target depth without contaminating the sample with material dragged down from above. The cone seals the tube while it is driven, then stays behind in the hole as the tube advances past it, so sampling begins in undisturbed ground at the depth you intended.
Recovering a continuous, intact column of soil so the profile can be described as a whole - horizon sequence, boundaries and their sharpness - rather than as a series of separate samples. It is the tool when the structure of the profile is the finding.
If you are driving rings, yes. The closed ring holder keeps the ring square so the sample enters cleanly rather than smearing at the edge, and the hammering head spreads the blow across the holder rather than concentrating it on the ring itself. Striking a ring directly deforms it and invalidates the sample.
Capped, upright, cool and as soon as practical. Protective caps seal sampling rings so moisture content is preserved between site and laboratory, and liners can be capped at both ends. Bulk density and moisture results depend entirely on nothing being lost in transit.
