Why depth control matters

Water is rarely uniform with depth. Lakes and reservoirs stratify thermally, estuaries stratify by salinity, and contaminated groundwater often has a layer of product sitting on the water table. A sampler that fills on the way down gives you a mixture of everything it passed through, which describes none of those layers correctly.

Messenger-triggered samplers solve this. They are lowered open so water flows freely through them, then closed at the target depth by dropping a weight down the line. What comes back is water from that depth and nowhere else. Where the layer you care about is thin, a horizontal Van Dorn is better than a vertical sampler, which necessarily spans a greater vertical interval.

The honest case against bailers

Bailers are convenient, cheap and sometimes required by the method, and they remain the practical answer for narrow wells and sites with no power. But the act of retrieving one agitates the water and exposes it to air, and that changes dissolved oxygen, redox and volatile content before the sample reaches the bottle.

If your determinands include volatiles or dissolved gases, low-flow pumping with a pump and flow through cell will give a defensibly better sample. Where you do bail, lower and raise slowly, do not drop the bailer onto the water surface, and keep clear of sediment at the base of the well.

Liquid sampler FAQs

Where the method specifies one, where there is no power available, where the well is too narrow for a pump, or where you need a quick single sample and setting up a pump is disproportionate. Be aware of the trade-off: lowering and retrieving a bailer agitates the water column and exposes the sample to air, which is a problem for volatiles and dissolved gases.
One that collects water from a specified depth rather than from wherever the tube happens to sit. Van Dorn and Kemmerer samplers are lowered open, so water flows through them on the way down, and are then triggered at the target depth to close and trap that water. In a stratified lake, reservoir or estuary that is the only way to sample a particular layer honestly.
Both are messenger-triggered discrete depth samplers and both do the same job. Van Dorn samplers are typically horizontal, which suits sampling a thin layer without mixing across it; Kemmerer samplers are vertical and are the traditional choice in general limnological work. If you are sampling sharply stratified water, the horizontal orientation is worth having.
Sampling a specific layer in a stratified liquid, including layered contamination such as product floating on water. Rod operated versions give positive control of depth and are easier in shallow situations; cable operated versions reach much deeper. Which you need is set by depth and by whether you need to feel the position precisely.
It captures water at depth and retains it during retrieval, for situations where you need a sample from a defined point without the mixing that a bailer causes on the way up.
Soil pore water rather than open water. A porous tube is inserted into the soil and suction draws the soil solution through it, leaving particles behind. Because it stays installed, you can sample the same point repeatedly over a season and get a time series rather than a single disturbed snapshot.
Lower and raise slowly, avoid dropping the bailer onto the water surface, and try not to disturb sediment at the base of the well. If dissolved oxygen, redox or volatiles matter to the analysis, a bailer is the wrong tool - use low-flow pumping with a flow through cell instead.
Yes, thoroughly, and on contaminated work it is one of the more common weaknesses in a sampling round. Anything lowered into one well or one water body and then another carries whatever it touched with it.
