Measure it where it is

The most common mistake in field water chemistry is measuring the wrong thing correctly. Dissolved oxygen and redox begin changing the instant water meets air, so a reading taken from an open bucket describes the bucket rather than the water body. Temperature drifts, and since pH and conductivity are both temperature dependent, so do they.

Measure in situ where you can, and in a sealed flow through cell in a pumped stream where you cannot. That last arrangement is also how you know when low-flow purging has stabilised and the water reaching the pump is genuinely formation water.

Calibration is not optional

pH electrodes drift, and they drift more as they age. Calibrating before each day of use takes a few minutes and is the difference between a defensible number and a plausible one — and on regulated work, an instrument with no calibration record casts doubt over the entire dataset regardless of how carefully the sampling was done.

Calibrate at temperatures near those you will measure at, keep buffers in date, and write the calibration down. It is the cheapest quality control available.

For most water work: pH, electrical conductivity and dissolved oxygen. pH and EC are stable enough to measure reliably in a sample; dissolved oxygen is not, and must be measured in situ or in a sealed flow through cell because it changes within seconds of the water meeting air. Turbidity is worth adding wherever suspended solids or sampling disturbance are a concern.
Pocket testers are for screening - quick, cheap, robust enough to live in a field bag, and adequate for checking whether something has changed. Full meter sets give better accuracy, proper calibration control and interchangeable electrodes, and are what you want where the number goes into a report.
pH before each day of use, without exception - electrodes drift, and an uncalibrated pH reading is not worth recording. EC and dissolved oxygen less frequently, though still regularly. Calibrate at temperatures close to those you will be measuring at, and keep the calibration record: on regulated work, an uncalibrated instrument makes the whole dataset difficult to defend.
Because water exchanges gas with the atmosphere immediately on exposure. Pour a sample into an open container and the oxygen concentration starts moving towards equilibrium with the air within seconds. Measure it in the water body itself, or in a sealed flow through cell in a pumped stream.
Quantifies colorimetric test strips by reflectance rather than by eye, so results are numerical and repeatable instead of a visual match against a chart. It covers a range of determinands depending on the strips used, and is a practical way to get semi-quantitative chemistry in the field without a laboratory.
Measuring flow velocity in open channels and watercourses, which combined with a cross-section gives discharge. Mechanical current meters are the traditional and well-proven approach; propeller choice affects sensitivity at different velocities, with aluminium and synthetic propellers offered.
If there is any chance of fuel, oil or other light non-aqueous phase liquid on the water table, you need an interface meter. A standard meter responds to the first conductive liquid it touches and will report the top of the product as the water level, with nothing to indicate product is present at all.
Check the specification for each instrument. Conductivity ranges vary, electrodes differ in their tolerance of high ionic strength, and corrosion is a factor in coastal and estuarine work. Tell us the environment and we will confirm which instruments suit before you order.
