Undisturbed sampling: rings and holders

Where a test depends on soil structure rather than just its composition, the sample has to reach the laboratory with its fabric intact. Sample rings are the standard way of doing that for bulk density, permeability, shear strength and water retention work.

Tube and core sampling

For longer samples and for reaching a specific horizon without disturbing what sits above it:

  • Stainless Steel Sample Tube — a durable tube for driven sampling where cross-contamination between sites is a concern.
  • Sample Liners — disposable liners that let the sample be capped and sent to the laboratory without transferring it, avoiding handling disturbance.
  • Coring Apparatus — for recovering continuous cores where the sequence of layers matters.
  • Split Tube Sampler — opens lengthways so the core can be examined, described and sub-sampled without pushing it out of a closed tube.
  • Lost Cone — keeps soil and water out of the tube while it is driven to depth, so sampling starts in undisturbed ground rather than in dragged-down material.

Half of a useful site record is made before anything reaches a laboratory. These standardise the description so two surveyors log the same ground the same way:

Getting to the sampling depth

Sampling equipment recovers the material; something else has to get you to it. For shallow work that is usually a hand auger, with a gouge auger to read the profile and decide which horizon to sample. For deeper investigation, see our drilling rigs.

Soil sampling FAQs

A disturbed sample is soil that has been mixed on its way out of the ground - fine for classification, chemistry and moisture content, but useless for anything that depends on structure. An undisturbed sample keeps the soil fabric, density and pore structure intact, which is what you need for bulk density, permeability, shear strength and water retention testing. Sample rings and tube samplers exist to take the second kind.
Ring volume is dictated by the test method your laboratory is running, so check that first rather than choosing on convenience. Using a ring the lab does not support means either recalculating results or repeating the fieldwork. If you tell us which standard you are working to, we will confirm the right ring.
A closed ring holder keeps the ring square to the direction of travel while it is driven, so the sample enters cleanly instead of being smeared or compressed at the edge. Driving a bare ring almost always damages the sample perimeter, which is the part the laboratory measures.
A lost cone sits at the tip of a sampling tube to keep soil and water out while the assembly is driven to the target depth. At depth the tube is advanced past the cone, which stays behind in the hole, and sampling begins in undisturbed ground rather than in material dragged down from above.
Yes, if you are driving them. The hammering head spreads the blow across the ring holder rather than concentrating it on the ring edge, which prevents deformation. Striking a ring or holder directly will distort the ring and invalidate the sample.
They standardise field description so that two surveyors record the same soil the same way. The colour book gives a reference chart for matching soil colour to a defined notation, and the sand ruler provides a visual reference for grain size. Both belong in a field kit alongside the sampling equipment.
They give a quick indication of soil strength in the field - the penetrometer estimates unconfined compressive strength, the vane tester estimates shear strength of cohesive soil. They are screening tools for deciding where to sample and how to log the ground, not substitutes for laboratory testing.
