Gouge augers recover a small volume of soil. If you need bulk material for laboratory analysis, or you are simply boring down to a target depth, a hand auger with an Edelman head is faster and gives you the quantity. Many crews carry both: a gouge to read the profile and decide where the horizons are, then an Edelman to take working samples from the horizon that matters.
