What extension rods do

A hand auger set is a string of components: a handle at the top, a head at the bottom, and extension rods in between. As the borehole deepens you break the string, add a rod, and carry on. Without rods your maximum depth is fixed at roughly the length of the head and handle, which is enough for a topsoil check and very little else.

Rods are supplied individually rather than as a set for a practical reason. Different investigations need different depths, and when a rod is damaged it is the one component you want to replace on its own.

Working out how many you need

Take your target depth, add the length of the auger head, and add the working height you want the handle to sit at when the head is at full depth — you cannot turn a handle at ankle level. That total, divided by rod length, is your minimum count. Buying one spare beyond that is sensible: rods do bend, and a job that stops a metre short of the target usually means a return visit.

It is also worth thinking about transport. A long string of rods is heavy and awkward to carry across a site, so crews working remote plots often carry the rods they expect to need rather than the maximum they own.

Connection types matter

Eijkelkamp hand auger equipment uses more than one connection system, principally screw thread and bayonet. They are not interchangeable. Before ordering, check what your existing heads and handle use — if you need to mix systems, the adaptor conical thread connection to bayonet and coupling sleeves in the accessories section will join them. If you are unsure, send us a photograph of your existing connection and we will confirm what you need.

Depth is limited by ground, not rods

Adding rods removes the length constraint but not the soil constraint. In workable ground a hand auger set will reach several metres. Stiff clay, dense gravel, cobbles and very dry compacted layers will stop progress well before that, and pushing harder tends to bend rods rather than advance the hole. A spiral auger will pre-drill through a hard band, but past a certain point the honest answer is that the site needs a mechanical rig rather than more rods.

Looking after rods

Rods live a hard life and get neglected because they look indestructible. Keep coupling threads clean and free of grit, wipe them before assembly, avoid overtightening, and dry them before storage. A clean connection separates easily at the end of the day; a gritty one seizes, and freeing it usually damages something.

Work back from your target depth. Each rod adds a fixed length to the string, so a three metre investigation needs enough rods to cover three metres plus the length of the auger head and a comfortable working height above ground. Most users carry one or two more than they think they need, because a rod short of the target means abandoning the hole.
They fit any head using the same connection system. Eijkelkamp uses screw thread and bayonet connections and the two are not directly interchangeable. If your existing kit uses a different connection to the rods you are buying, an adaptor from the auger accessories section will bridge them.
No. Rods remove the length limit, not the ground limit. Stiff clay, dense gravel, compacted or very dry layers will stop a hand auger regardless of how many rods you add, and forcing it risks bending a rod or shearing a coupling. A spiral auger can pre-drill through a hard layer, but beyond a certain resistance a mechanical rig is the right answer.
Replace it. A bent rod puts the whole string off axis, which makes turning much harder, wears the couplings unevenly and tends to bend the next rod up. Because rods are sold individually you can replace the damaged one rather than the set.
Keep the threads and coupling faces clean. Grit driven into a connection is what makes rods difficult to separate at the end of a long day. Wipe the connection before assembling, avoid overtightening, and dry the rods before they go back in the bag.
