Eijkelkamp soil auger handles for hand augering and percussion work — standard, ergonomic, detachable grip and beathead options. The four handle options
All four fit the same Eijkelkamp auger system. The difference is how they feel in use and what you are allowed to do to them.
- Normal Auger Handle — the standard cross handle supplied with most hand auger sets. Simple, strong and the right default for routine sampling.
- Auger Handle with Ergonomical Design — shaped grips that spread load across the hands. Worth the upgrade if you bore many holes in a day or work long survey seasons.
- Auger Handle with Detachable Grip — the grips come off so the handle packs flat. Useful for air travel, tight vehicle storage and shared kit boxes.
- Auger Handle with Beathead — a hardened striking face on top so the assembly can be driven with a hammer. This is the handle to use with gouge augers, sample tubes and any percussion work.
Why the beathead matters
The single most common way to ruin a handle is to hit one that was never designed to be hit. A standard cross handle will deform, the coupling will loosen, and the whole string becomes unreliable. If any part of your work involves driving a gouge auger or a sample tube into the ground, buy the beathead handle and pair it with an impact absorbing hammer rather than a lump hammer — the absorbing head protects both the tool and your wrists.
Building the rest of the set
The handle sits at the top of a string. Below it you need rods to reach depth and a head matched to the ground:
- Hand Augers — Edelman heads for clay, sand and coarse sand, plus stony soil, spiral, riverside, hogweed and peat options.
- Extension Rods — add reach as the borehole deepens.
- Gouge Augers — for near-undisturbed cores; pair with the beathead handle.
- Auger Accessories — coupling sleeves, adaptors, hammers, spatulas and carrying bags.
- Hand Auger Sets — complete kits with handle, rods and heads already matched.
Looking after a handle
Handles are the least glamorous part of a set and the part most likely to be neglected. Keep the coupling clean and free of grit, check the connection for play before each site visit, and dry the handle before it goes back in the bag. A worn or sloppy coupling wastes effort on every turn and eventually rounds off the mating part on your rods, which is a far more expensive thing to replace.
