Tubing is the least expensive part of a sampling setup and one of the easiest ways to compromise a result, so it is worth specifying properly. Choosing between PE and silicone

The two are not interchangeable, and most sampling setups end up using both. PE is the workhorse for the vertical run: it is stiff enough to feed down a well without folding on itself and it resists kinking when the line is under its own weight. Silicone is what goes through a peristaltic pump head, because it survives repeated compression by the rollers where a stiffer tube would crack or flatten permanently.

A common arrangement is PE down the well and a short silicone section at the pump. If you are running a submersible pump instead, PE for the whole run is usually the simpler answer, with a ball valve at the surface for flow control.

Tubing and cross-contamination

Tubing is the component most likely to carry contamination between wells, and the one most often reused because it looks clean. Surfaces retain traces of what has passed through them, and on a contaminated land site that is enough to put a detection in a well that does not have one. The defensible approach is to dedicate a length to each well, or to fit fresh tubing between wells. At the price of tubing against the cost of a disputed dataset, this is not a close call.

Getting the length right

Order from depth to water, plus the drawing depth, plus enough surface run to reach your containers and field instruments without stretching the line. Then add margin. A tubing shortfall at the well head turns into an awkward, contorted setup or a wasted visit, and it is among the cheapest things in the kit to over-order slightly.

PE tube is stiffer and holds its shape, which makes it easier to feed down a well and less likely to kink under its own weight. Silicone tube is flexible and is what peristaltic pumps need, because it has to be compressed repeatedly by the pump rollers without failing. Many sampling setups use both: PE for the run down the well, silicone for the short section that passes through the pump head.
On clean water work, with proper decontamination, sometimes. On contaminated land work it is poor practice. Tubing is porous enough at the surface to retain traces of what has passed through it, and cross-contamination between wells is one of the hardest things to defend in a report. Dedicating a length per well, or replacing it between wells, costs far less than repeating a sampling round.
It gives you control of flow at the surface without stopping and restarting the pump. That matters for low-flow sampling, where the objective is a steady, gentle draw rather than a series of surges, and it lets you isolate the line while changing containers.
Work from the depth to water plus the depth you are drawing from, plus enough surface run to reach your containers and instruments comfortably. Then add margin. Running short at the well head means either an awkward setup or an abandoned visit, and tubing is one of the cheapest items in the kit.
It can. Some determinands, particularly volatiles, are sensitive to the tubing material and to the length of time the sample is in contact with it. If you are working to a specified method, check what material it requires before ordering rather than after the laboratory queries the results.
Not for anything you intend to report. Generic tubing is not manufactured to a controlled specification, may leach or adsorb, and can introduce contamination that is indistinguishable from a site finding. The saving is a few pounds against the cost of a compromised dataset.
