The Edelman heads
Blade geometry is what separates the Edelman models. Each opening angle is cut to release a particular kind of soil cleanly rather than pack it in or drop it on the way up.
- Edelman Auger for Clay — narrow opening for cohesive, sticky soils.
- Edelman Auger for Sand — wider opening that retains loose, free-draining material.
- Edelman Auger for Coarse Sand — for gravelly ground where finer blades jam or deflect.
- Combination Edelman Auger — compromise geometry for varied and unknown profiles.
Specialist augers
- Stony Soil Auger — reinforced for gravel and small cobbles, and best paired with a Stone Catcher to protect the head.
- Spiral Auger — pre-drills hard, dry and compacted bands so a sampling head can follow.
- Riverside Auger — saturated, soft ground and bank material near watercourses.
- Hogweed Auger — cuts through dense root mass that fouls a standard blade.

Complete sets
A set removes the compatibility guesswork and is almost always better value than assembling the same components individually.

Connection systems explained
The single most common ordering error in hand augering is a connection mismatch. Eijkelkamp uses two systems. Conical thread screws together and holds securely under load, which suits heavier work and longer strings. Bayonet connects with a push and a twist — much faster when you break the string repeatedly to add rods, and far less likely to seize once grit is in the joint.
They will not mate directly. If you are standardising a fleet of kit, pick one system and stay with it. If you are adding to equipment you already own, check what it uses first, and bridge with the conical thread to bayonet adaptor or a coupling sleeve where necessary.
Handles, rods and accessories
The normal handle suits routine work, the ergonomic handle reduces strain on long survey days, the detachable grip handle packs flat for transport, and the beathead handle is the only one that may be struck — use it with an impact absorbing hammer rather than a lump hammer. Add extension rods for depth, and bent spatulas and a carrying bag to keep the kit workable and accounted for.
